Questions

What is a split sheet?

A one-page record of who wrote a song and what share each writer gets, signed by every writer. The shares must add up to 100%. It covers the song, the words and music, not the recording.

How do I save the sheet as a PDF?

Press “Print or save as PDF”, then choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. On a phone, the same option is in the share or print menu. You can also download the sheet as a plain text file.

Does a split sheet have to be signed?

Signing it is what shows everyone agreed. Print it and have every writer sign and date it, or save the PDF and collect signatures however your band works. If a song ever earns real money or someone disputes a share, ask a music lawyer what your sheet needs.

What if we don’t know our IPI numbers yet?

Leave them blank and add them later. An IPI is a writer’s ID number at their PRO (the organization that collects performance royalties, such as BMI or ASCAP), and you get one when you join. Every co-writer needs one before the song can be registered properly.

Does the recording have to be split the same way?

No. The song and the recording are two separate copyrights, and bands often split them differently. A session player might get a share of the recording and nothing from the song. Agree the recording’s split separately and write that down too.
